That understanding shaped what came next. It told our technicians that the fault was almost certainly located inside the mechatronic unit, not at an externally fitted part.

Step 2: Checking for technical service bulletins

Our technicians looked for technical service bulletins (TSBs) relating to the specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and the symptoms Mr P had described.

  • A bulletin was found matching the exact fault code and the reported behaviour
  • It confirmed this as a recognised issue with DQ381 transmissions, linked to deterioration of the integrated pressure sensors within the mechatronic unit
  • The bulletin set out that as these sensors wear or drift outside their calibrated range, the TCU begins receiving inaccurate pressure data and miscalculates clutch position, resulting in irregular gear selection and inaccurate clutch position control

The bulletin was consistent with what the Volkswagen P1736 fault code had indicated. Even so, our technicians needed to confirm the fault through direct testing before committing to a repair.

Step 3: Serial data analysis at rest

With the vehicle stationary, the engine off, and the ignition on, our technicians recorded pressure readings for both clutches using manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment.

  • For a transmission functioning as intended, both clutch pressure readings should sit as close to 0.00 bar as possible under these conditions
  • The clutch 2 reading fell outside the expected range, consistent with a pressure sensor that had drifted beyond its calibrated tolerance
  • The clutch 1 reading remained within normal parameters, confirming the fault was restricted to the clutch 2 side of the system

The readings aligned with the Volkswagen P1736 fault code and with Mr P’s experience behind the wheel. The even-numbered gears were the ones being affected, which is exactly what a clutch 2 fault would produce.

Step 4: Visual inspection

Our technicians examined the mechatronic unit externally, along with the wiring harness and connectors, checking for visible damage, corrosion, or insecure connections.

  • No external issues were present, confirming that the fault lay within the mechatronic unit itself

The conclusion

The evidence left one clear answer. The Volkswagen P1736 fault code had pointed directly to the integrated pressure sensor for clutch 2, located on the TCU circuit board inside the mechatronic unit. This sensor had shifted out of specification and was no longer returning accurate hydraulic pressure data for the clutch 2 sub-transmission, which caused the TCU to miscalculate clutch position and engage the even-numbered gears incorrectly.

This sensor forms part of the internal mechatronic assembly and cannot be replaced as an individual component. The complete mechatronic unit needed to be replaced.

  • Manufacturer-level diagnostic software was used to carry out a calibration and adaptation procedure. Following mechatronic replacement, this step is essential — it allows the new TCU to calibrate to the specific tolerances of the existing transmission and clutch assembly
  • All stored fault codes were cleared

Post-repair road test

  • A structured road test was completed to give the transmission the conditions needed for clutch adaptation under real driving
