What is an MOT
Let’s start with the basics – what exactly is an MOT? An MOT test is an annual check on the safety and roadworthiness of UK licensed vehicles over 3 years old (in Northern Ireland over 4 years old.)
What does MOT stand for?
The MOT was named after the UK government department the Ministry Of Transport, which is now the Department For Transport (maybe it will be a DFT test one day.)
What tests are done in an MOT?
To carry out an MOT test, various parts located all around your vehicle will be checked. The following list gives you some of these parts, but for a more detailed list, speak to your MOT tester or visit the GOV.UK website.
Bodywork – This is to check the overall vehicle structure and to make sure there isn’t any serious corrosion or that it has substandard welding or repairs, that could impact safety.
Exhaust System – This is a check on the functioning of the vehicles exhaust system to ensure it’s in good condition, it’s not too noisy, and it’s safely secured to your vehicle.
Fuel System – This is a general check, to ensure there are no fuel leaks, the hoses are in good condition, and that the fuel cap is complete and secure.
Seatbelts – This is to check if the seatbelts are in place and in good working order, and that they’re suitable for the type of vehicle.
Doors – This is a basic check to ensure the doors to your vehicle are secure when closed, they open from the inside and outside, and that hinges and catches are in good condition.
Tyres – This is a check of the overall condition of your vehicle’s tyres, and will include the tread depth, general condition, and if the type and size are appropriate for that vehicle.
Brakes – This is a general check that the brakes stop the vehicle within recommended stopping distances, they haven’t been modified, fluid levels are correct, and that the ABS (Anti-Locking Braking System) is functioning as it should.
Is the oil checked on an MOT?
Yes, your vehicles oil and other fluids, such as screen wash, brake fluid and coolant are checked, to ensure they’re at the right levels and in good condition.
How long does an MOT take?
An MOT will take around 40 minutes to an hour, depending on the condition of your vehicle, and how the testing station carries out the test.
What’s the difference between a service and an MOT?
An MOT test is a legal requirement in the UK to check the overall safety and roadworthiness of your vehicle, and NOT the condition of mechanical working parts.
A service, however (depending on the level of service) will cover various safety aspects of your vehicle, plus the condition and functionality of the major mechanical parts of the vehicle, including the engine, gearbox and clutch.
