The passive/sporadic classification made sense in the context of how the vehicle had been used. Because Mr W typically drove shorter journeys around Milton Keynes, staying within the car’s electric range, the system did not always need to start the combustion engine. This meant the fault wasn’t triggered on every drive cycle. Step 2: Checking TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins)

Our technicians searched the manufacturer’s TSB database for any known issues associated with the P2884 00 fault on this type of transmission. A TSB was found, issued by the manufacturer, which confirmed this as a recognised fault.

The conclusion

With the P2884 00 fault code confirmed, the TSB aligned with the exact symptom and stored code, and external factors ruled out through inspection and electrical testing, our technicians were confident they had identified the root cause. A faulty pressure-regulating valve within the mechatronic unit was preventing the engine disconnect clutch from closing, leaving the combustion engine unable to engage.

Restoring Full Hybrid Operation Through a Mechatronic Unit Replacement

  • Fresh oil was filled into the transmission to Audi’s specification.

Calibration and adaptation

  • Manufacturer-level diagnostic software was used to conduct the required basic settings and clutch adaptation procedures following replacement. This allows the transmission control module to relearn the operating parameters for the clutch and hydraulic systems within the transmission.

Post-repair road test
