BMW is known for making performance cars for the masses. The M-Series has been around for decades, the newest of which is 1 Series M. Most notably the top-spec 140M has the power and handling of an M-Series car but in a smaller package.

At Quality Car Service, we were handed one of these rare machines and were immediately surprised as it had no service history. Not keeping on top of service schedules, or a mistake from dealerships could result in warranties becoming void, a lower resale value and a reduction in overall vehicle safety. If a serviceable component was not replaced when it should have been then it is more likely to cause a catastrophic failure and therefore a high repair bill for any unfortunate owner.

This particular 140M was handed to us by the owner, who noticed a service light on the dashboard. If the service was not performed at the correct time then when our client attempts to sell his prestigious BMW, it suggests that the car was not taken care of properly.

The 3.0L engine is the beating heart of the 140M and with an output of 340hp, and lots of torque, it’s an exciting car to drive. How we fixed the lack of Service History

In our client’s case, our team turned to the BMW ISTA system that BMW dealerships use. Not every workshop has access to this system but fortunately, at Quality Car Service, we do. We connected the ISTA system to our client’s 140M and ensured that it correctly communicated with the car.

Unlike other tools, the ISTA system is connected to the BMW servers where we can see the service history. With our client’s 140M, the service records were not present. This may be due to a garage not having access to the system, BMW neglecting this step during their servicing, or there was an issue with BMW systems and the service history had been deleted. We were unsure why this happened.

Our technicians could update the system to match the service records our client’s BMW had on paper. This would make the online system up-to-date and accurate, leaving no issues in the future.

However, our client visited our workshop only for us to perform a routine service. Going above and beyond for our customers, we knew that our client’s BMW service records needed to be updated accordingly. When his 140M left our workshop BMW records showed up-to-date service information, including the service we performed.

Performing a BMW 140M Service

Our customer entered our workshop in his prestigious BMW 140M which required a routine service. This involved replacing the oil, oil filter, cabin filter, air filter, spark plugs and a close inspection of other components. We checked the fluid levels and quality, and performed a diagnostics scan, whilst performing an air conditioning service thanks to our team of air con specialists.

At Quality Car Service we know how important it is that your vehicle gets serviced properly. This involves changing serviceable parts every 10,000 miles, or as required. Our client’s BMW 140M had around 33,000 miles on the clock when it entered our workshop and we were glad to see that the car had two previous services.
